Talk by Jonathan: "The birth of the cello - and the death of the viol?"
Jonathan Rees traces the cello's rise, and the viol's fall in popularity as the favoured bass instrument as a reflection of changing musical taste in 17th- and 18th-century Western Europe. Talk to include live performances on cello and viol of works by composers including J.S. Bach, Sainte-Colombe, Gabrielli and Abel, and recordings by Duo Domenico. Duration: 1 hour 45 min, with a short break.
